In part 2 of her journey documentation, my group client Fiona explains how she has finally realised that diets don’t work.
I’ve been thinking about all the diets I have ever been on in my life – ALL THE DIETS!!
Shockingly, I’ve realised I’ve been on and off diets for at least twenty years – I dread to think how much that has cost me (and not just in pounds Sterling). And yet here I am, still not happy with the way I look, still wanting to lose weight and still not really knowing how to do it. What exactly did all those diets teach me then?
If diets worked, we’d only ever need to go on one. I’ve lost weight on diets, I don’t deny that, but whatever diet I’ve followed it’s never fit into my lifestyle, meaning I’ve had to change the way I live my life. Who wants to count calories or points for the rest of their lives? Who wants to miss out on an amazing meal because they can’t eat carbs or they’re on a fasting day? What sort of a life is that?
When I think about the amount of time, money and effort I’ve put into diets over the years it makes me angry. Angry that I’ve now completely lost my way with food because of them and angry that lots of other people are in the same boat.
And don’t think that denying yourself the odd piece of cake or a glass of wine isn’t a diet – because it is! It’s diet mentality, fall out from previous diets that have more than likely failed. It’s this mentality that I’m slowly learning to shake off. Twenty years of being told I can’t eat what I want, when I want is going to take time though. Cheers to that
