Why do you want to lose weight?

If you come to me asking for help to lose weight, I will ask you why.

Not because there is anything inherently wrong with wanting to but because I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t get you to dig deep.

The truth is, we live in a world that makes us believe we need to ‘fix’ ourselves.

Our bodies are under constant attack for not being thin enough, for being too thin, for being too tall, for being too short…

But your body is YOUR value – it is no-one else’s business.

Instead of questioning the culturally thin ideal, however, we let it rule our hearts and minds.

We live in fear that if we gain weight, our partner will stop loving us or our family and friends will lose respect.

Or we believe that if we are thinner, we will find a better spouse or job.

But this beauty ideal is a social construct and a distorted one at that.

Yet we are rewarded and applauded for conforming.

Hearing ‘wow, you look great,’ when you have starved yourself and neglected your personal wellbeing, is addictive.¬† ¬†Addictive and so very damaging.

But it is not wrong to want this reinforcement in a world that is so upside down….

The reality is that you are just trying to live your best life in a broken system of oppression, a system that isn’t going to change overnight.

You do have a choice though.

Instead of just accepting the messages being rammed in your face each and every day, you can question them.

You can disagree with dieting in a response to weight shaming and social stigma.

You can shout loudly, ‘I am enough‘, and choose to work on your inner self NOW.

Then, if you still have aesthetic goals, you will be in a stronger, more empowered position to achieve them permanently.  Not to mention for the RIGHT REASONS.
